Arthur and Peggy first contacted us years ago for help in redecorating their living room, which was successfully completed, then life got in the way – demanding careers, business travel, aging parents. They had to put some of their other decorating plans on hold, and as many people do, they put their master bedroom at the bottom of the list.
Unsure of how long they would be staying in the house they had lived in for over 15 years, they decided it would be a good idea to update the interior now so they could be enjoying it. Being an established realtor, Arthur knew that some changes would be necessary in order to market the house if/when they decided to make their weekend lake home their permanent residence.
The long-overdue makeover for the master bedroom was spurred by the need to remodel the bathroom to bring it up to today’s standards. While the general contractor completed work in the bathroom, we started planning on the design changes for their bedroom.
Arthur and Peggy decided they wanted a restful, peaceful retreat to offset their demanding work lives. It was also important that the bedroom work seamlessly with the newly remodeled bathroom. First, a new paint color was selected that would flow from the bedroom into the bathroom. We recommended an overall color palette of soothing blues and creams with just a pop of yellow to highlight some prized pieces of artwork from Arthur’s family that were to be placed over the bed. No more busy patterns and bold color schemes; this space was going to be all about tranquility!
While we kept the cherry poster bed, we lightened up the overall look by adding a pair of nightstands custom finished in a lighter style. The undersized bedside lamps were replaced with larger scale pieces with a glass base to continue the overall open feel of the room. Custom bedding in solid tones of spa blue and cream added to the restful mood of this space.
The two traditional wingback chairs were in great condition and one was a favorite of Arthur’s. We reupholstered them to match in a softly textured cream-toned fabric for a more classic and timeless look … and removed the doily arm covers!
We kept the wall of windows looking out to the wooded backyard very open by adding just a pair of drapery panels on either side in another cream- toned fabric that would help to soften the room but retain the view. An updated table and lamp between the chairs provide a nice place to read or simply put one’s feet up and relax; the pop of yellow in a fresh bouquet of flowers echoes the same accent color found in the artwork.
Voila! Arthur and Peggy now have a beautiful new master suite they can enjoy, and the house will be ready to show if they should decide to move in the future.
Within this design, we used products/services from Gat Creek, Super Upholstery, Bernhardt, Cox, Kravet, Eastern Accents and Uttermost Company.
