We have worked with Paige and Craig in the past helping them transform the main living areas of their home in South Forsyth County to a place they can enjoy and feel comfortable. They have raised five children in this home, and like many, have always put their children first. After a career change for Craig and in the midst of putting five children through college, they had to take a pause from their interior decorating activities.
They had saved redesigning their master bedroom until last. Finally, when the time was right they contacted me to help them transform their master suite into a personal space that was tranquil, relaxing and comfortable.
It was a spacious room with an adjacent alcove that was perfect for creating a comfortable lounging area for Paige.
We started by selecting a color palette that would provide the base for providing a room that was restful… a place to unwind and relax. Paige really enjoyed the colors drawn from natural coastal areas: soft blues, greens, sand and cream tones. (If you would like input on your home’s color schemes, please feel free to download my free Color Guide to Interior Decorating.)
The current room was a hodgepodge of pieces, none of which really worked together or were particularly important to the clients. The mattress and box spring were the only pieces to be used in the new design.
We selected linen and cotton based fabrics and colors to create the bedding ensemble that were soothing and subtle. Very few patterned fabrics were used in this room. A custom made headboard created a nice focal point for the space. We added a bench at the foot of the bed and replaced ill-fitted nightstands with a couple that were proportionate in size to the bed and the scale of the room. A pair of lamps on the nightstands, in the right height and scale, provides light for reading.
A chaise in a white cotton fabric was introduced into the alcove, which also contained built-in bookcases, to provide a personal space for Paige to relax and read. Custom draperies in a silky fabric and subtle tones soften the space and frame the windows without blocking out the natural light from outdoors.
Perhaps the best choice for redesigning this space was the electric fireplace we selected in a cream toned faux stone finish. It provides a natural looking flame that can be temperature controlled with a simple push of a button from a remote control. The finish on this piece complements the rest of the classic, coastal, cottage feel of the room.
Now Paige and Craig have the space they have deserved for themselves! If you are interested in seeing the design installation, including before and after photos, check out this video:
