One of the quickest and easiest projects to create a “wow” factor in your home is to freshen up your powder room. This is a space where you can create a lot of impact at a minimal cost. Since this can often be one of the most widely used places on the main level of your home, give your guests a treat. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Walls – Consider a bolder color of paint or, better yet, an interesting wallpaper. Don’t be afraid to get a little dramatic here. If you are using a wallpaper, avoid stripes and small patterns. Think large scale, even if it is a small room. Many of today’s wallpapers are washable and strippable.
- Lighting – An easy way to change the overall mood of this space is to update or upgrade the light fixture over the vanity. Think of using something a little more interesting than the standard builder grade. If you have a larger powder room, adding a chandelier is a great way to add some ambience. If you have room on either side of the vanity mirror, wall sconces are always preferred to a fixture over the mirror.
- Cabinet – If you have a small pedestal sink, switch it out for a more interesting and functional cabinet. Many of these look like free standing pieces of furniture and also provide space for storing extra toiletry items. Adding a vessel sink in an interesting finish is also a great way to give this room some character.
- Mirror – Introduce a mirror with some personality and get rid of the basic builder oval that I have seen in hundreds of homes. I love using a round mirror here, if space allows, to balance the other lines of the space.
Rug – Add a small area rug…. Not a bath mat! This will help to soften the area and add some texture and color.
- Accessories – Don’t forget to add some nice quality hand towels that coordinate with your color scheme. A large piece of artwork works well on a bare wall or over the commode. It is best to avoid a lot of small wall hangings. If the commode is on the same wall as the vanity mirror, it looks better to do something other than another framed piece over the commode. A wall sconce, architectural wall hanging would work nicely. An attractive soap dispenser and container for hand lotion add a thoughtful finishing touch for your guests.
Have fun with this area of your home! A little will go a long way in making a big difference for this room. Treat your guests, and yourself, well by considering some of the upgrades I have mentioned.
