The team at AHT Interiors is back to share more photos from an ongoing, multi-room design project in one of our client’s homes. Today’s focus is on their entry and sitting room areas.

Because the sitting room is immediately visible when guests enter the home, we focused on creating flow and continuity between these rooms. The clients love a darker interior wall color but we didn’t want to go too dark!  We settled on Sherwin Williams Tony Taupe (7038) in the entryway; the sitting room was painted in Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki (6150) which updated the previous color and gave it a bright and modern feel.  We sanded and refinished all of the hardwood flooring in the entry foyer. We then replaced the carpet on the stairway with a beautiful Tuftex pattern-style carpet which is 100% stainmaster nylon and therefore perfect for this high traffic area.  The rest of the home was replaced with a plush Shaw carpet in the color Biscuit.

We updated the lighting fixture in the entry foyer to provide brighter light and more of a modern look to the area. We then added the beautifully carved chest which was passed down from their grandmother and holds her well-used Singer sewing machine.  The tall vase was added to bring a pop of color into the entry – one that flows into the sitting room as well. Finally, in order to define the shape of the space, we added a round wool accent rug.

The original sitting room sofas were black, which, along with the bolder wall paint, made the room appear quite dark. After changing the wall color, we opted to lighten up the large pieces of furniture in the room while allowing for darker pops of colors in smaller pieces. The eclectic-style black and gold lattice chest was utilized instead of a typical side table to allow extra dimension and an elegant contrast.  Not only does this chest become the showcase of the room but it also provides functionality; the three large drawers offer generous storage space for the clients.  The dark accents continue throughout the room with the black lamp shades as well as the client’s beloved carved ‘dragon chair’ and black-accented table, which provides a beautiful base for the family’s shrine.

The loveseat (with custom performance fabric), fun faux fur pillows, and accent chairs bring a light and airy balance to the room with their soft but sturdy upholstery fabrics. The ottoman provides a bit of fun as well as functionality; its color is reflected in the accessories and wall art, bringing cohesiveness to the area. Because of its location and size, the client’s beautiful piece of art on the wall above the lacquered chest delivers the finishing touch to this lovely room – and it looks beautiful from the entry foyer as well!
