This month, the team at AHT Interiors has put together a collection of articles to help you while in the planning stages of your kitchen remodel. Today’s focus is your kitchen’s cabinets and cabinet hardware.

Kitchen Cabinets

White cabinets continue to be extremely popular for their clean look and ability to make your kitchen appear larger. We can expect white shades to continue to be the go-to kitchen cabinet colors for years to come. A popular, budget-friendly update to your cabinets involves painting instead of replacing them; we work with reputable companies that offer professional painting using durable lacquers. Consider your kitchen’s floor, backsplash, and trim to find the perfect shade of color for your kitchen.

If you opt to paint your cabinets yourself, please do not forget to clean and degloss with professional products before you apply the primer and paint layers. If you are looking for durability, we recommend hiring a professional, however!

A newer minimalist trend we’re seeing these days is the removal of upper cabinetry to bring about a more open, airy look in the kitchen.  Open shelving is being used instead of enclosed cabinetry for items such as dishware and artwork.  Clean lines and no-frills looks are definitely on-trend, so be sure to keep it very neat if you go for the open shelving look.

Another trend is the use of different colors on your upper and lower cabinets (or a different color on your kitchen island). There are many examples of this online, so take a look to make sure you love this trend before trying it yourself. Also, make sure that the colors you choose work well together and with your appliances, countertops, and flooring – if you need help with this step, please give us a call.

Also, note that bold hues on your major surfaces and appliances might get tiresome; try to limit your bolder colors to accessories, artwork, or dishware.  You can always change your pop of color when you tire of it.

If your home construction allows it, you can ‘bring the outside in’ by adding more windows to your kitchen space. Light is always a welcome addition to any kitchen!

Cabinet Hardware

To maintain cleaner lines, choose horizontal cabinet pulls. There are typically many styles to choose from wherever cabinet hardware is sold. Don’t worry about mixing finishes and metals in your kitchen. It actually makes for a more interesting space, so enjoy the variety!

Your hardware acts as the ‘jewelry’ for your cabinets, so try not to shy away from unique pulls and other touches. Have fun and bring your personality to this aspect of your kitchen’s design.
